UPI Transaction Limit 2026: Daily Limits by Bank & App
How much can you send via UPI per day? Here are the 2026 UPI transaction limits by app and use case, plus how to raise them.

In this article
UPI is India's default way to pay, but daily limits apply. Here is a clear breakdown of UPI transaction limits in 2026 and how to work within (or raise) them.
General UPI limits
- Standard: up to Rs.1 lakh per day across most apps (NPCI cap).
- Specific categories (verified merchants, capital markets, insurance): up to Rs.2 lakh - Rs.5 lakh.
- UPI Lite: small PIN-less payments, capped per transaction for speed.
- New users: some banks cap the first 24 hours at a lower amount for safety.
Limits vary by bank, not just app
Your actual limit is the lower of the app limit and your bank's UPI limit. Two people on the same app can have different limits depending on their bank.
How to handle large payments
- Split across two days, or use two linked accounts/apps.
- For very large transfers, use NEFT/RTGS instead.
- Raise per-transaction limits in your bank app where allowed.
Why UPI has daily limits
UPI’s daily transaction caps are not arbitrary — they exist for two reasons: to keep individual fraud losses contained if your account is ever compromised, and to manage the volume of transactions on the payments rails. The cap also nudges users towards NEFT or RTGS for genuinely large transfers, which have better dispute and reversal mechanics for high-value cases. The good news is that the limits are generous enough for almost every everyday use — rent, bills, dining, shopping, even most small-business payments — and there are clear ways to handle bigger transfers when you need them.
The detailed limit map
For most users the working limit is Rs.1 lakh per day across all UPI apps combined. Specific categories carry higher caps: verified merchants (large retailers, utility companies) and capital markets (stock and mutual fund purchases) allow up to Rs.2 lakh; insurance and IPO applications can go up to Rs.5 lakh per transaction. These higher slabs apply automatically when you transact with eligible categories — no special setup needed.
Your real limit: the lower of bank and app
The number you actually get is the lower of two things: the UPI app’s policy limit and your bank’s own daily UPI cap, which varies across banks (HDFC, SBI, ICICI, etc.). Two people on the same app can have different limits depending on their bank. If you find yourself hitting a cap, the constraint is often your bank rather than the app; sometimes switching to a different bank or raising limits in your bank’s own app unlocks more headroom.
UPI Lite, AutoPay and newer features
UPI Lite lets you make small payments (up to a few hundred rupees) without entering your PIN, drawing from a small balance you load — perfect for shop counters and tea stalls. UPI AutoPay handles recurring payments like subscriptions and SIPs by pre-authorising the merchant. UPI on Credit links your RuPay credit card to UPI so you can scan-and-pay from your credit line. Each has its own caps, but together they keep the small-payment friction near zero.
How to handle large payments
If you need to move more than the daily limit in a single go, you have several options. Split across two days — the limit resets every 24 hours. Use two linked accounts or apps to combine quotas. For genuinely large transfers, switch to NEFT, RTGS or IMPS, which are designed for higher amounts (RTGS has a Rs.2 lakh minimum and no upper limit). Many banks also let you raise per-transaction UPI limits in their own app for eligible categories, often with an extra OTP.
Common errors and fixes
If a UPI transaction fails or returns a limit error, the usual culprits are: the daily cap on either side has been hit, the recipient bank’s server is temporarily down, your VPA or QR was scanned incorrectly, or your PIN is too old (banks now require periodic resets). Most failed transactions automatically reverse within a few hours, but you can also raise a complaint in the app to speed things up.
UPI international
UPI is steadily expanding overseas. You can already use Indian UPI apps at QR codes in Singapore, the UAE, France, Mauritius, Nepal and Bhutan, with more countries joining each year. Limits abroad follow the same daily-cap structure, and you pay no card-style forex markup — a meaningful saving for travellers. Check whether your specific app and bank support international UPI before relying on it on a trip.
Safety and PIN discipline
Treat your UPI PIN like an ATM PIN. Never share it with anyone, including bank “agents,” and remember that a real receiver never asks you to enter a PIN to receive money — only senders enter PINs. Enable app-lock or biometric protection, set a lower daily limit in your bank app if you do not need the full Rs.1 lakh, and use UPI Lite for small payments to reduce PIN exposure. These small habits make UPI nearly impossible to misuse against you.
Track your UPI usage
Every UPI app keeps a detailed transaction history that doubles as a free spending tracker. A quick monthly review reveals where your money actually goes, catches any unfamiliar payments early, and helps you spot subscriptions or auto-debits you no longer need. Many apps now categorise spends automatically, turning your payments app into a passive personal-finance dashboard with zero extra effort.
The bottom line
UPI’s daily limit of Rs.1 lakh (with higher caps for verified merchants, markets and insurance) is enough for almost every everyday transaction; for larger transfers, NEFT or RTGS take over. Know which limit is binding — the app or your bank — use UPI Lite and AutoPay for friction-free small payments, guard your PIN, and UPI quietly handles practically all your payments at zero cost.
