Best Cashback Credit Cards in India 2026
In this article

Cashback is the simplest credit-card reward - real money back, no points to decode. But the headline "5% cashback" hides caps and category rules. Here are the best cashback credit cards in India for 2026, ranked by the return you actually earn.

Top cashback cards at a glance

CardCashbackAnnual fee
SBI Cashback5% on all online spendsRs.999 (waived on Rs.2L)
Amazon Pay ICICI5% Amazon Prime, 2% billsLifetime free
HDFC Millennia5% on 14 partner appsRs.1,000 (waived on Rs.1L)
Axis ACE5% bills, 4% Swiggy/ZomatoRs.499 (waived on Rs.2L)

How to pick the right one

  • Shop everywhere online? SBI Cashback - flat 5% with no merchant lock-in.
  • Amazon-heavy? Amazon Pay ICICI, and it is lifetime free.
  • Pay lots of bills? Axis ACE gives 5% on utilities via Google Pay.

Watch the caps

Most cards cap cashback at Rs.1,000-5,000 a month. Spending beyond the cap earns nothing, so match the card to your monthly spend rather than chasing the biggest headline number.

The best cashback cards in detail

SBI Cashback Card

The standout for online shoppers. You earn a flat 5% on almost every online spend with no merchant restriction, and 1% offline, capped at Rs.5,000 cashback a month. The Rs.999 annual fee is waived once you spend Rs.2 lakh in a year. Cashback is auto-credited to your statement, so there is nothing to redeem.

Amazon Pay ICICI Card

Lifetime free, with 5% back for Amazon Prime members, 3% for non-Prime, 2% on bill payments and partner merchants via Amazon Pay, and 1% everywhere else. The cashback lands instantly as Amazon Pay balance. For anyone who shops on Amazon, this is the easiest high-value card to own.

HDFC Millennia

5% cashback across 14 popular apps including Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato and Myntra, plus 1% on other spends. The Rs.1,000 fee is waived on Rs.1 lakh annual spend. Cashback comes as CashPoints that adjust against your statement.

Axis ACE

5% on utility bills and recharges paid through Google Pay, 4% on Swiggy, Zomato and Ola, and 2% on everything else, with a low Rs.499 fee waived on Rs.2 lakh spend. The best pick if a big chunk of your monthly outgo is bills.

How cashback is credited

Cashback reaches you in one of three ways: a direct statement credit (SBI), instant wallet balance (Amazon Pay ICICI), or points you adjust against the bill (HDFC CashPoints). Statement credit and wallet balance are the most hassle-free — there is no redemption step and no expiry to track.

Eligibility and how to apply

Most cashback cards need a CIBIL score of 750+, a steady income of Rs.3 lakh a year or more, and standard KYC — PAN, Aadhaar, an income proof and a recent bank statement. Apply online, complete e-KYC, and approval usually takes two to seven working days. Existing bank customers often get instant pre-approved offers.

Cashback vs reward points vs miles

Cashback is the simplest and most predictable reward — one rupee back is worth exactly one rupee. Reward points and air miles can be worth more if you redeem them well (especially for flights), but they carry caps, expiry dates and redemption friction. If you value certainty and zero effort, cashback wins; if you travel often and enjoy optimising, points can edge ahead.

How to maximise your cashback

  • Route each spend to the card that pays most for that category — bills on Axis ACE, Amazon on Amazon Pay ICICI, broad online on SBI Cashback.
  • Stay within the monthly cap; spends beyond it earn nothing, so a second card can help.
  • Always clear the full statement — interest of 36–42% p.a. wipes out every rupee of cashback.
  • Hit the annual fee-waiver target so the card stays effectively free.

Common cashback mistakes

The biggest error is chasing a high headline rate while ignoring the cap — a 5% card capped at Rs.500 a month returns less than a 2% card with no cap for a big spender. The second is revolving a balance to keep the card “active”; you never need to carry debt to earn rewards. Pay in full, every month.

Cashback on UPI-linked RuPay cards

Several issuers now offer RuPay cashback cards you can link to UPI and use at any QR code. This unlocks cashback on small everyday payments — kirana stores, autos, street vendors — that previously only accepted UPI from your bank account. If a large share of your spending is small UPI payments, a RuPay cashback card can quietly add a few thousand rupees a year.

Is cashback taxable in India?

For individuals, routine credit-card cashback is treated as a discount on your spending, not as income, so it is generally not taxable. Only unusually large reward values may attract questions. For everyday cashback in the thousands of rupees a year, there is nothing to declare.

Who should get a cashback card?

Almost everyone. Cashback cards suit first-timers and seasoned users alike because the value is immediate and needs no optimisation. If you are unsure where to start, a lifetime-free Amazon Pay ICICI plus the SBI Cashback Card covers the vast majority of Indian spending patterns between them.

Should you pair two cashback cards?

For most households, two complementary cashback cards beat one. A common winning combo: the lifetime-free Amazon Pay ICICI for Amazon and bill payments, plus the SBI Cashback Card for everything else online. Between them you capture 5% on the bulk of your spending with only one annual fee to worry about, and you never lose rewards to a single card’s monthly cap. Keep a no-fee card as the backup so you are never forced to spend just to waive a fee.

Cashback cards and your credit score

Used well, any cashback card builds your CIBIL score: it adds to your total available credit, and paying the full statement on time every month is the strongest positive signal in the scoring models. Keep utilisation under 30%, never miss a due date, and a humble cashback card becomes a quiet engine for a better score and cheaper loans later.
